When we talk about cross-functional teams, we talk about people from different areas working together. We can have a project team with people from Systems, Database, Middleware, or even people from management areas working with technical people. And, why is this distinct from any other teams?

First of all, cross-functional teams can provide not only support to specific tools, but also end to end solutions directed for a specific application or client. But not just it.

The thing is that, when we talk about innovation, we are talking about getting ideas together, in a team. It’s important to note that the more diverse a team is, more varied ideas it will have. And, it’s great! Especially when looking for new solutions or products.

Most of the experience I’ve been having working with various teams is from our Agile workshop trainings. For example, when we use the Marshmallow Challenge, people need to build a tower of spaghetti, and marshmallow of course, where the tallest tower will win.

The teams that were most successfully in this task were the ones where technical people worked with people from administrative areas and, also, teams where we had both women and men working together.

So, people from different areas, with diverse knowledge and experiences, when working together, with a clear goal and empathy, will be the ones with more innovative ideas. And that’s why we need to respect and celebrate diversity!
